Knee Pain Causes and Relief with Home Remedies, Exercise. Knee pain can occur at the knee cap in the front, on the sides of the knee and at the back .Knee pain can make it very difficult to walk and bend the knee. Playing sports is almost out of question. There are generally different causes of knee pain in the young and the old. In older people, there is higher incidence of chronic knee pain, generally at the knee cap. This is mostly caused by diseases like gout and arthritis. Knee pain is also common in teenage and adolescent boys below 15 years of age. This is a common syndrome and it gets well after that age.
Still, knee pain is a problem and one should use all the tips at the disposal to heal knee pain quickly and get back to walking normally.
These are the common causes of knee pain.

  • Sports and Injuries : The most common cause of knee pain is an injury to the knee region. It can be caused by sports, exercise, while running or due to sudden violent forces like falling and getting struck by something. Sprains and strains can happen around the knee joint. The pain can be caused by ligament tears, like the ACL tear which happens to people who do skiing. Sports like basketball which require a lot of twisting and pivoting can cause torsion and pain in the tendons. In most cases, you would know that you have gotten injured at the knee. The knee is a flexible but fragile joint. Sometimes, we pound our knee cap against something which can cause the knee cap to pain a lot. Severe injuries can lead to fractures which are very painful. Some people may experience excruciating level of pain because of a knee dislocation. There are generally visible signs of a fracture or a dislocation of the knee, like swelling, tenderness, extreme pain in the knee joint.
  • Arthritis and Gout : These are inflammatory diseases of the body. They onset at mid age or old age and can happen to men and women both. Arthritis and gout both can cause knee joint pain. In fact, chronic pain and discomfort in doing daily activities like walking, sitting and cycling are the first signs of arthritis. It can be healed with proper medicine and home remedies.
  • Pain in front of the knee right at the kneecap can be Patellofemoral Syndrome. This type of pain is generally caused by excess pressure on the knee like extra body weight or due to pounding caused by running. However, this pain can be improved with exercises like quadriceps. 
  • Pain at the sides of the knee and up towards the thighs is a lateral pain caused by overuse of the Iliotibial band. This is a band of tissue running from the knee to the hip along the side. It is most often caused by endurance sports like running. 
  • Tingling or Burning pain in the knee can also be caused by a pinched nerve. Even in injuries, compression forces can pinch blood vessels and cause distortions that could lead to nerves getting pinched. These nerves than radiate pain sensation all along the nerve fibers. 
  • Pain at the back of the knee is less common. It can be caused by tear of a tendon or ligament, pulling the hamstring muscle or a radiating nerve pain. If the pain at the back of knee ( posterior ) is accompanied by thigh pain, usually after a jet lag , then it could be deep vein thrombosis ( DVT ) which is a serious problem. You should consult the doctor if you have a knee pain at the back along with thigh pain.
 When to go to a Doctor ? Knee pain can be a huge discomfort. If you have the following symptoms along with knee pain, it is best to go to a doctor.
  • There is excruciating or unbearable pain in the knee. 
  • You can see swelling on or near the knee and unable to put any weight on the knee. 
  • If you can see distortion in the knee joint on comparing with the other knee. 
  • If the range of motion of the knee is seriously compromised . That means you are unable to straighten the knee or if it gives sharp pain. 
  • Sometimes, knee pain can be intense enough to cause fever, which is a sign that you should go to a doctor. 
Relief from Knee Pain at home. There are some self help techniques to ease knee pain caused by different causes.
  • Apply Ice on the knee if it is an acute pain, like one caused by injury. Ice really helps in preventing swelling, reducing pain and giving prompt relief. 
  • If you cannot straighten your leg, then keep a pillow under the knee and lay down. 
  • Do not use hot cloth on the knee to reduce pain, even if it is cold. Heat can promote build up of fluid and lead to even more pain. 
  • If the pain has reduced in intensity, start doing stretching exercises for the knee. These exercises promote faster recovery from knee pain - Calf Stretch, Hamstring Stretch and Quadriceps and Bringing the Knee to the Chest. 
To relieve the knee pain, the bark of white willow tree has been used since ancient times. It is a naturally strong anti inflammatory substance that acts against diseases like arthritis and relieves pain. Other herbal remedy to ease knee joint pain is turmeric. Just taking 1 tbsp of turmeric in half a glass of milk can be beneficial for knee pain that is caused by injury.
