Pleuritic Chest Pain : Causes And Relief.  Pleuritic Chest Pain is a pain that occurs in the chest. It produces a sharp pain from the chest when the person inhales. Often, the pain is severe if the person breathes deeply. Pleuritic chest pain is caused by inflammation of the pleura. This is the wall that encaplsulates the lungs within the ribs. In fact, pleuritic type chest pain can happen to anyone at anytime and it is generally not a matter of much concern.

Actual Cause of Pleuritic chest pain : When the pleura layer gets inflamed, it may create friction at its contact with the ribs. So, when the person breathes, this friction occurs and there is shooting pain. The person normally reacts by making breathing slower and shallower. This may lead to lower oxygen levels in the blood and feeling of dizziness.

What does pleuritic chest pain feel like ? It can occur suddenly, often after waking up in the morning. The pain varies with breathing and is often localized. It may occur just below the lowermost right rib, or near the sides of the ribs. Pleuritic pain may also be described as stabbing but it occurs just at a particular position and somewhat intense.

Causes of Pleuritic Chest Pain : The most common cause of this pain is pleura inflammation. This is caused mainly by infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis. Other infections of the respiratory tract can also cause this pain. Pleuritic chest pain also happens because of injury to the chest. Injuries are common in sports. Playing sports like rugby increases the risk for pleuritic pain. That is because the pleura may get abnormally stretched and injured in such sports. People who have chronic acid reflux problem can also have this pain. Some serious medical conditions like cancers can also cause pleuritic pain.

How long does pleuritic type chest pain last ?  In most cases, it lasts for a week or two. But, pleuritic chest pain may also extend for months. In some people, there can be auto immune disorders which promote the body to damage its own tissues. In such cases, this condition may be prolonged and take time to heal. In a normal immune system, the body will start working to heal the problem as wuickly as possible. In any case, one should not neglect this sharp chest pain and go to the doctor if it is not improving.

In cases when this problem turns worse, there can be some significant symptoms. Pleuritic chest pain may cause blood in vomiting or cough, faster heart beat, fever and shortness of breath. These are symptoms of pleuritic chest pain that is not mild. A medical examination is done in which differential diagnosis is utilized to rule out the possibility of serious disease.

How to relieve pleuritic chest pain ? Some home remedies are worth trying to see if they alleviate the pain and make it easier to breathe.

  • Applying hot cotton pads over the chest. This technique may work but it may also work on the opposite side. That's because this chest pain can be caused by any of the causes mentioned. 
  • Take a warm water bath. Come out and lay on that side of chest which is paining. 
  • Take a warm tea : Sipping tea can be beneficial in two ways. Firstly, it warms up the body. Secondly, it provides hydration to the body. Do not drink a herbal tea which is powerful diuretic, like dandelion tea. This may leave the body dehydrated, making it difficult for body to improve the pain. 
  • Apply a healthy massage oil like olive oil over the region. The pain may reduce in intensity.
